Butterfly Monitoring Network: volunteer training and butterfly survey

A volunteer opportunity to monitor biodiversity of the Cascade-Siskiyou region. No experience necessary for this educational training event. (A continued summer-commitment encouraged but not required - four to six days total).

The Cascade-Siskiyou region is nationally renown for its butterfly diversity, home to over 120 types - including unusual, rare, and imperiled species. Join this regional collaboration with Vesper Meadow, Xerces Society, Selberg Institute, Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, The Crest at Willow-Witt, BLM Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument., and The Biodiversity Research Collaborative

Experience the joy of getting to know these colorful neighbors, while contributing to an ongoing community research project to track these pollinators (pollardbase.org) and better understand their habitat needs.

Volunteer training event:

Saturday May 30th, 10:30am - 12noon ONLINE Webinar training session on survey procedure and protocol, local butterfly identification and geographic locations.

Individualized butterfly training surveys (small groups 1-2 people pair with 1-2 leaders):

SIGN UP for one or more socially distant butterfly surveys May 30th - August 30th. Participants (individual or couples) will work with a site leader for a butterfly survey at various locations throughout the Cascade-Siskiyou region. Participants will be able to choose among different scenic locations; Vesper Meadow Restoration Preserve, Sampson Creek Preserve, and in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

Bring: Close-toed shoes, long pants, sun protection, water bottle, sack lunch. Bring your own butterfly net and viewing jar if you have one and otherwise these will be provided.

Social distance protocol: We will coordinate with volunteers ahead of time make sure individual needs will be met. During surveys, we will keep at least 6ft distance, and have hand sanitizer available. Participants are encouraged to wear face masks.

The Cascade-Siskiyou Butterfly Monitoring Network is a newly established long-term monitoring program that monitors butterfly populations in the Cascade-Siskiyou bioregion of southwest Oregon and Northern California. The program brings together researchers, land managers, and community scientists to collect data that will inform local conservation efforts and help program managers evaluate long-term population trends and map out regional butterfly distributions.
