Headwaters Restoration Volunteer Day

Willow Planting for Creek Restoration

It’s as easy as putting a stick in the mud! Literally!

restoration-volunteers-Ashland

Join as a volunteer at the scenic Vesper Meadow Restoration Preserve. For a third year we will continuing ongoing restoration planting of willows. The Indian Creek at Vesper Meadow is a headwater creek of the Rogue River using restoration techniques to weave willow cuttings. Learn to create live gully-breaks and diverse creek features - a fun and easy way to participate as a land steward. All are welcome, recommended for ages 12 and up. Social distancing will be maintained, and the entire event will take place outdoors. We will be abiding by the most current COVID safety recommendations.

As we re-establish native riparian vegetation, planting willows will restore the creek channel previously eroded by grazing and down-cutting associated with lack of vegetation. Increased riparian vegetation will also decrease stream temperature, and restore habitat for birds and aquatic organisms.

Prepare:

  • required: wear work boots or knee-high waders, layers, sun protection, work gloves

  • recommended: bring a sack lunch and water bottle (we will provide extra water and supplemental snacks!), camera/ phone

  • recommended: bring your own hand clippers, digging tools
